About us

Individual fire protection solutions from a single source

Wagner Rail GmbH, based in Haar (near Munich) and a subsidiary of WAGNER Group GmbH, has been developing integrated and standalone fire protection system solutions for rail vehicles since 1994 and has established itself as a leading supplier in the global market. Our goal is to work close with the customer to tailor the system solution and providing services such as engineering, documentation, commissioning, maintenance, training and for retrofit projects.

The portfolio includes false alarm-proof fire detection systems for rapid detection of smoke particles, an innovative water mist system for fire fighting in the passenger area, and gas or aerosol extinguishing systems for protecting technical areas. The system technology can be used either as a standalone system with direct connection to the TCMS or as an integrated system with a fire alarm control panel and software interface to the TCMS.

Since Wagner is a family owned company having the 50th anniversary next year, a strong focus is laid on a long lasting and fruitful relationship to our customers which includes a long time availability of our systems and spare parts.

WAGNER Group is today the global leading manufacturer of air sampling smoke detection systems that are also widely used on rolling stock since more than 30 years starting with locomotives from ABB which have been produced also in India and which are still in operation throughout India. The Indian standard for locomotives, which is still valid, shows our ASD Systems from 30 years ago.

Worldwide reference projects include Metro Munich, Newcastle, Glasgow, Kuala Lumpur or Helsinki, many EMU trains such as Caltrain, RailJet OBB, SV Dosto from SBB, the whole Velaro and Desiro fleet from Siemens the world-record train from RhB in Switzerland and the EMU fleet from Stadler in Switzerland and other European countries. Finally, to be mentioned are many passenger coaches and sleepers such as Alstom in Canada or for Czech Railways, PKP in Poland, OBB or Stadler for Kazakhstan and as well locomotives from Siemens, SBB, Toshiba, FPS, DB, DB Cargo and Alstom.

Since 2019 Wagner Rail is cooperating with JK Exim in New Delhi and together, more than 6.000 ASD systems have been installed in LHB passenger and sleeper coaches. Wagner also provides effective fire protection solutions for non-air-conditioned LHB coaches with its unique portfolio.

The portfolio includes false alarm-proof fire detection systems for rapid detection of smoke (more than 50.000 Aspirating Smoke Detection systems are installed worldwide), an innovative water mist system for fire extinguishing in the passenger area, and gas or aerosol extinguishing systems for protecting technical areas.

WAGNER Rail – Advanced Fire Protection Solutions for Rail Vehicles

WAGNER Rail provides certified fire protection solutions tailored to the specific safety requirements of rail vehicles. Our systems are designed for reliable performance, compliance with international standards (e.g. EN 45545, NFPA 130), and seamless integration into existing vehicle architectures. Our comprehensive portfolio ensures reliable safety for both passengers and onboard technology – even under the most demanding conditions.

  • Fast and reliable fire detection across all areas of the vehicle, enabling immediate response to potential threats

  • Automatic gas-based extinguishing systems designed for critical technical compartments such as battery enclosures, control cabinets, and traction systems

  • Highly effective water mist suppression for passenger areas, combining maximum extinguishing performance with minimal water usage and high operational safety

Drawing on decades of experience in fire protection engineering, WAGNER Rail develops customized solutions that meet the highest international safety standards. Our systems are seamlessly integrated into vehicle architectures and engineered for long-term reliability – to keep people and assets safe, wherever the journey leads.

WAGNER Rail – Market Leader in Aspirating Smoke Detection for Rail Vehicles

WAGNER Rail is a recognised market leader in the field of aspirating smoke detection (ASD) systems for rail applications. More than 60.000 sspirating smoke detection systems are installed worldwide. These systems actively sample air from the environment and analyse it continuously for even the earliest signs of combustion – offering unmatched reliability in fire detection.

Key advantages of WAGNER’s ASD technology include:

  • Discreet installation, fully concealed within the vehicle to preserve interior aesthetics

  • Vandalism protection, ensuring system integrity and long-term functionality

  • Early fire detection, providing critical time for intervention and minimizing potential damage

With over 6,000 ASD systems already installed in trains across India, WAGNER Rail has demonstrated the scalability, reliability, and international acceptance of this cutting-edge technology.

Our ASD systems are designed specifically to meet the complex safety and operational demands of the rail industry – from metro systems to high-speed trains – and comply with all relevant international fire safety standards.

Water Mist Fire Fighting

We specialize in the development and integration of low-pressure water mist fire suppression systems tailored for use in passenger compartments. Our system offers a space-efficient and highly effective solution for enhancing onboard fire safety.

The system operates by releasing finely atomized water droplets through specially designed nozzles. These microdroplets form a dense mist that rapidly cools the combustion zone, suppresses flames, and binds smoke and toxic gases, significantly improving air quality and visibility in emergency situations. The use of low water pressure enables the system to be compact and energy-efficient while maintaining high suppression performance.

In the event of a fire, the vehicle is divided into separate protection zones. This configuration allows passengers to safely relocate to the unaffected section of the carriage, providing a critical window for safe evacuation at the next station. This compartmentalized safety concept supports both fire containment and controlled passenger movement under emergency conditions.

Our water mist technology is designed for easy integration into new and existing railcar designs, offering flexibility in layout, minimal impact on available space, and compliance with stringent fire protection standards in the rail industry.

Gas extinguishing systems and aerosol extinguishing for use in enclosed areas

We protect enclosed areas such as control and switch cabinets, as well as electrical systems in underfloor areas and locomotives with risk-appropriate gas extinguishing systems. We typically use natural extinguishing gases such as nitrogen. By introducing nitrogen into the protected area, we reduce the oxygen concentration and thus prevent the fire from starting and spreading. We do it completely residue-free and non-destructive.

In conjunction with the earliest possible fire detection, the use of gas extinguishing technology enables the rapid, reliable and residue-free extinguishing of an incipient fire. The extinguishing agent does not pose a risk to electrical systems. As modular systems, gas extinguishing systems are designed according to the size of the areas to be protected.

Aerosol systems are ideal for use in technical containers and power packs. When triggered, these extinguishing systems release fine aerosols that can safely extinguish a fire in the enclosed area. Aerosol systems are used where gas extinguishing systems with cylinders in the container are too expensive.
